Big pharma emits more greenhouse gases than the auto industry
Alchemy Skills to cultivate: Connection
Well-being Stewardship Pathway: 7 Zones of Medicinary Choices
Your choice of medicines - your choice of medical sciences - directly contributes to the health (or lack of health) of the planet
Let’s start with some facts: big pharma significantly contributes to both air and water pollution
Green house gasses:
The pharma market is about 28% smaller than the automotive market, yet pollutes at a rate 13% higher than the auto market.
To reach the target levels of the Paris Climate Accord, the overall pharma sector would need to reduce its emission by about 59% from 2015 levels.
Toxic Waste in groundwater
The Hyderabad region of India is is one of the world’s largest bulk drug manufacturing locales. As of 2016 manufacturers there continued to discharge untreated or inappropriately treated waste into the environment.
This problem is not isolated to India. Similar alarming levels of toxicity are found around the globe.
In addition to the drugs themselves, tests detected heavy metals and industrial solvents at levels many times the legal maximums. leaving both humans and wildlife to live in a never ending toxic soup. Heavy metals and chemicals enter the water system resulting in fish having to work 30% harder to remove contaminants from their bodies, which results in malformations and fertility reproductive difficulties.
The toxicity impact is not isolated to the manufacturing process. Pharma toxins also seep into our environment via excreted human and animal waste.
As an Alchemist, you know it’s all connected . . . healthy planet = healthy people
The Alchemist path: Go beyond the binary choice of medicines …
Well-being Stewardship expands your range of choices!
One of the foundational Well-being Stewardship Pathways is the 7 Zones of Medicinary Choices
Medicinary tools in every zone have their benefits. Their value and benefit to you depends on the nature of your being and the nature of your current need, It is well established that traditional/western/convention (allopathic pathogenesis) medicine - what MDs learn in school focused on prescribing pharmaceuticals and surgery to suppress/control - is not suited for “chronic” conditions. Nor is it suitable for anything labeled as “chronic,” or anything that doesn’t come with a disease label.
Allopathic (Red Reductionist Zone) medicine is what you want when you break something.
In other words, medicines of big pharma aren’t suited to uplift well-being and support you to live a life of Vibrant Living
The medical sciences in your Green Stewardship Zone (the observational sciences of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Homeopathy) were designed to elevate well-being. As an example, the translation of “Ayruveda” is “the science of life.” LIFE. As in living.
Consider that in contrast to the medicine of MDs, which is pathogenesis, the study of disease.
If you’re aiming for well-being (salutogenesis), start with the Green Stewardship Zone medical sciences as your foundation.
When we crafted the 7 Zones, the color scheme came naturally based on a range of resources.
Somewhat serendipitously, the nature of the Green Stewardship Zone medincary tools draw mostly from natural elements- things that grow or naturally occurring organic materials. You are alive, Green Stewardship Zone medicinary tools have life in them. This creates connection your mind, body and spirit recognize.
As long as those are sustainably and organically grown, these medicinary tools aren’t degrading our air and water quality. In some cases as demand for plant medicine grows, your choice may add to bio-diversity.
The impact of Green Stewardship Zone medical sciences is quite the opposite of the pharmaceutical industry (western/conventional medicine in the Red Reductionist Zone)..
5 minute Alchemist Practice
The binary choice between “traditional/western” and “alternative/.complementary” is a falsehood created by the healthcare industry.
This limited worldview keeps you keep you locked into their way of thinking. Every time you buy into this limited choice of 2 options you are giving away your power as an Alchemist.
Activity:
Listen to yourself, your friends, television or radio, or seek out articles to read, and pay attention to the language choice used to describe “medicines.”
Is the context about fighting something or suppressing something, or is the context about uplifting well-being, releasing and expanding?
Answer the question for yourself: how does your current choice of medicine impact your well-being and the well-being of the planet? What is the connection? Are you comfortable with choice? What would you change and why?
