The other day a friend of mine, we’ll call her Sally, lamented that she was not looking forward to an upcoming appointment with a practitioner she has seen almost every week for over a year.

She described the nature of that relationship:

  • The practitioner was always at least 15 minutes late for an appointment that typically lasts an hour. Even if Sally booked the first appointment of the day. To be time efficient, Sally adjusted and arrived 15 minutes later than the scheduled time.

  • Sally said it was fairly common for the practitioner to be noticeably irritated, angry or distracted. This resulted in Sally walking on egg shells before, during and even after each appointment.

  • Sally had initially wanted her son to also see the practitioner, and the practitioner refused, basically saying children are germ carrying entities, and she didn’t want to be around children. This global assessment of children didn’t sit well with Sally.

Even with this awareness, Sally continued to pay this practitioner for months, thinking she didn’t have a choice. Sally believed it was her job, as the person paying for services, to make adjustments to accommodate the practitioner’s temperament, time table, and belief systems. That’s the old way!

This is not a healing relationship.

With Awareness and Discernment, the Alchemist knows when it’s time to move on.

That’s the new way!

Cultivate Awareness : are you experiencing the healing feelings?

When we feel connected, comfortable, understood, strengthened and empowered - some combination of those feelings - that supports us to heal.

In any - in every - interaction with anyone in a “healing” or “health” profession, be aware of how you feel during the entire experience?

  • How do you feel in the process of getting to the location? Is the drive or commute comfortable or nerve wracking?

  • How do you feel waiting (do you even have to wait, or is everything ready for YOU)? Is the experience designed to be calming, or is the experience less than soothing for some reason (perhaps you notice how the practitioner treats staff with disrespect)?

  • How do you feel during the payment process? A bumpy process can be more than upsetting and this will affect your ability to heal.

  • Back at home, how do you feel in hindsight? Do you feel heard, understood, were your questions truly answered, do you feel better (whatever that means do you) than before the appointment?

Then cultivate Discernment: what can you adjust to have a healing experience?

Know when reasonable adjustments can be made by both parties. For example, can you move from a relationship where the practitioner “knows all” to a partnership?.

Acknowledge if you are expected to constantly adjust (your expectations, your schedule, your means of communication), that it may be time to find someone who can truly be a well-being partner.

5 minute Stewardship practice

Think about interactions you have had with one of your practitioners. Could be an MD, a dentist, a chiropractor, a Reiki practitioner. For purposes of this practice it doesn’t matter. You might want to do this for each person you work with.

Grab a piece of paper. Make three columns

In the left column, make a list of all the steps you encounter during your interactions with this person and/or her staff. From leaving your home, arriving, the “exam” or “treatment,” the conversations, interactions with staff, payment, after the appointment. As many things and you think of.

In the middle column write down how you feel at each step or stage.

In the right column, write down how you want to feel. Look at the “healings feelings” for guidance. Do you want to feel comfortable, connected, understood, strengthened or renewed at each stage?

Reflect:

  • How often do you feel the way to want to feel - that will support healing?

  • How often are you not feeling the healing feelings?

  • What do you learn from this?
